About Dr. Anna Szlavi

Dr. Anna Szlavi works at the Institute for Women’s and Gender Studies at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU), in Linz, Austria. Previously she was affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Norway, the Department of Media and Educational Technologies at Eotvos Lorand University in Hungary, and the Department of Visual Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA.

Dr. Szlavi has been leading EU-level projects targeting gender inclusion in STEM for several years, while also giving lectures, presentations, and workshops on DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion), gender-inclusive language, and inclusive design around the world. Among others, she was the co-chair of the ACM-Women Trondheim Chapter, focusing on involving more women in IT in Norway. She was also a work package leader in the Women STEM Up project, creating a mentorship program for women students in STEM. In Horizon Europe project EUGAIN (European Network for Gender Balance in Informatics), she worked on designing interventions for girls and women in IT all around Europe.

In 2025, Anna Szlavi was nominated for the DigIT Woman of the Year in Tech Award and the Nordic Women in Tech Award, in the “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Champion” category.

Dr. Szlavi has done extensive research on gender diversity and inclusion in STEM. With her research projects, she aims to explore the reasons why we have so few women in STEM. Additionally, her projects also investigate tools that can make transformative change for gender equality. Her research projects have served as an inspiration for Dr. Szlavi’s teaching practices at JKU as well. In her compulsory lecture courses, she makes her students agents of change, rather than listeners. Students design and implement intervention projects, ie. tools, to make their environments more gender-inclusive and diverse.
